Introduction to our director of coaching and player development

Mr. Dek Smith

With over twenty years of professional experience, Coach Dek Smith comes to MAIS after many years in the field of football coaching and player development, holding the title of Director of Coaching in many countries through Europe and across America.

Coach Smith holds a number of UEFA Awards & Qualifications, including UEFA A Coaching Award and Class A Referee Certification. Coach Smith has experience of working with National Football Associations in the UK and USA; he is qualified to coach players at every level, and also to deliver Coach Educational Programs.

Coach Smith believes that football players develop invaluable life skills through the sport: respect; tolerance; gamesmanship; self-discipline. In addition, they acquire an appreciation of the global game played in 190 countries worldwide. Through MAIS Football Academy, our objective is to implement a strong development program, available to both boys and girls, from Grades IV-XII. Players will follow a proven ten-week program in each school term, directed by Coach Smith, based around a professional coaching syllabus, to effectively combine technical, tactical, physiological and psychological aspects of the game.

About our Academy

Mar Athanasius is renowned for excellence in a wide variety of sporting disciplines, and has successfully developed athletes to the International, National and University level competitions owing much to the proper training and facilities given in the college. Olympian Anilda Thomas and Olympian Gopi T are the pride of Mar Athanasius College who represented India in the Rio Olympics in 2016. Championships and events were won by the College during the past years. In recognition of these achievements the Sports Authority of India gave accreditation to the Mar Athanasius Sports Academy under Khelo India Talent Development Program, which has been given only to 12 selected academies in India.

The Khelo India Scheme aims to encourage sports all over the country. It aims at strengthening the sports ecosystem in India by promoting the twin objectives of mass participation and promotion of excellence in sports. Further, the major aim of the program is to help Indian sportspersons to reach the pinnacle of world sports focusing at the initial stage, a podium finish at the 2024 and 2028 Olympics.
